Home Pools - Health and Safety in Pools

In 2001, more than 400 people were seriously injured in and around New Zealand's swimming pools.

Common causes of injury included slips, trips and falls while running around the side of the pool, resulting in dental injuries, fractures, abrasions, strains and sprains. More serious incidents, (including severe spinal and neck injuries), occurred when diving into shallow water.

Pools can be fun places, but need to be treated with respect. Pool sides can be slippery and depth can be difficult to gauge. If you are unfamiliar with the pool you are swimming in, always walk around the pool side and check the depth before jumping or diving in.

Each and every pool should have some safety signage. Pool rules and what to do in the event of an emergency should be clearly displayed, including home pools. The information should incorporate:
